Bribery for President Donald Trump and his family has become such a political liability in US politics that, according to a new poll reported last week, “about 69 per cent of registered voters, and almost 50 per cent of those who voted for the president in 2024, said they were ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ concerned about ‘corruption, self-dealing or conflicts of interest’ in the Trump administration…Nearly half of all registered voters also said corruption had been more of a problem during Trump’s second term compared with previous administrations…Corruption has become a top concern for voters, second only to affordability.”

For the Kremlin, bribing Trump has been a political opportunity – a costlier one, but also a more reliable one than President Vladimir Putin’s bribe for the Clinton family which failed in 2009 to produce the promised approval of Hillary Clinton, then Secretary of State, for the sale of  General Motors’ Opel car division in Germany to a Russian carmaker.

“There is no question bribes have already been paid,” says a Moscow source in a position to know. “Whether for [Trump family] weddings, gifts, or crypto business, they have been paid. Russian oligarchs and the Kremlin happily play these games to free up their own money and reassure Putin that they are helping the military gain advantage on the battlefield.”

According this source, bribery has worked in the “pre-war period for many years — with the Germans on Nord Stream, with the Finns, with the French in Total, with the Italians and with the Turks, involving gas pipeline and nuclear deals. Russians did such things with almost all the Europeans and Americans after 2014. They paid them and let them take. It has worked; it will usually work. Hence Putin’s confidence that Trump will deliver because the whole family is on the take and payments have been made. In this situation, continuing to dangle bribes and bribing his children, achieves the purpose. Trump will eventually deliver — something.”

The reason Putin keeps complimenting Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, with “appreciation for her humanitarian efforts”, is, according to this source,  that this is the Russian reminder that the bill is coming due — it’s time for Trump to deliver. Over the past year, the Kremlin website records six repeats of the same message by the President; two more by other Kremlin officials.

In the new podcast with Nima Alkhorshid, recorded on Tuesday afternoon Washington time, we put the Melania message in its political and military context, and predict what Trump will be able to deliver after Election Day next week. RUSSIAN BALL IN TRUMP’S COURT, PUTIN GIVES WORLD CUP BALL TO BARRON TRUMP, JULY 16, 2018

“Vladimir Putin: As for the ball being on our side where Syria is concerned. The President just mentioned that we successfully organised and hosted the World Cup. As for the ball… I would like to pass the ball to the President, all the more so because the US will host the World Cup in 2026. Donald Trump: That’s right, thank you very much, we do host it, and we hope we do as good a job. That is very nice. That will go to my son Barron, there is no question. In fact, Melania, here you go.” http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/58017
